Born Abraham Elieser Adolph Schönberg (frequently Anglicised to Schoenberg, and even Schonberg), on the 12th May 1868, in Dornum, Aurich, in the Kingdom of Hanover (before there was a "Germany"), the son of Levy Schönberg and his wife Sophie Fanny (also Fanny Sophie) Salomon, Adolph changed his name first to "Albert Shean", then to "Al Shean", presumably to better market himself as a stage actor.
His one older sister, Pauline, having emigrated a decade or so earlier, firstly going to England (where she married), then on to America in 1872, and his father and another older sister, Hänne, having emigrated together in 1877, papa Levy returned to collect more of the family for emigration in 1879. So it was that Adolph, along with his parents and his sister Miene aka Minna, and his younger brother Heinemann aka Heine (later Harry) boarded the Rhein in Bremen and set sail for the new world, arriving in New York on August 9 that year.[1]
Adolph, as he still was, and Johanna Davidson were married on the 15th February 1891, in Manhattan, New York.[2] They were to have three known children, a son: Lawrence Albert (later known as "Larry"), born May 28, 1897; and twin daughters born on July 28, 1900: Marie Julia, buried three days later on the 31st; and Selina Ruby, died August 22, 1901.
After making a name for himself in vaudeville, Shean teamed up with Edward Gallagher in August 1910, to create the act Gallagher and Shean. While the act was successful, the men apparently did not like each other much. Al was not the first Shean to work with Gallagher, as his sister Hänne's son, Louis Lawrence Lefevre - name changed to "Lou Shean" - had been a member of Ed Gallagher’s touring company earlier in 1910 (in the northern hemisphere spring).
Al Shean né Abraham Elieser Adolph Schönberg, also Schoenberg, passed away on August 12, 1949, aged 81 years, and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York.[3]
Legacy: Al's grandson: Alan David Shean (1930-2002) — also known as "Al Shean", and "Alan Shean" — is known for having worked on "The Bullwinkle Show", "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", "The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show", G.I. Joe (TV Series), as well as many more.[4]
