Research notes

Multiple spellings of his given name. In the estate of Henry Ledbetter, he signed a statement regarding the bill of sale and spelled his given name as "Chattin."

Death date estimate. Chattin did not appear in the 1850 census, but when did he die? Prior to the 1847 date in Item 1 below, Chattin's home in Cave In Rock was in Gallatin County, IL but afterwards the township was in Hardin County. Item 2 shows that due to an 1884 fire, few records survive for Hardin prior to that date. He had not been found in probate records in Gallatin County. If he had died before the border change, the odds increase that records would have been found for him in Gallatin, where records exist, although their completeness is unknown. In addition, the 1850 U.S. Census Mortality Schedule (on Ancestry) does include deaths in Hardin County between June 1, 1848 and June 1 1850, and he was not listed there. Since neither probate records nor or mortality schedule listing have been found for him, it is suggested that his death date was 1847, 1848, or the first half of 1849.

Item 1. 20 Feb 1847 GALLATIN lost to HARDIN. (Ill. Laws 1846-1847, priv. and spec., pp. 30-31) From the Newberry Library website: https://digital.newberry.org/ahcb/documents/IL_Individual_County_Chronologies.htm#GALLATIN Item 2. 1884 A fire burned the courthouse on 19 May and most records were lost. Opportunities for further research. Efforts were made to locate some of the sources mentioned in the book compiled by William G. Scroggins. Some of these efforts were unsuccessful. For example, one reference says that John Scroggin's probate is located in Box 179 of Gallatin County, while another says it is in Box 124. Regardless, it has not been located among the digital images on FamilySearch so must be pursued through other avenues if warranted.
