Biography
Leonard was born to John Scroggins (abt.1765-abt.1824) and Sarah (Unknown) Scroggins (1787-1842) in Gallatin, Illinois,[1] about 1820.
Leonard married Mary Ann Davis on 3 September 1843 in Shelby County, Illinois.[2]
In the 1850 census Leonard (age 30) was a farmer in Sand Creek, Shelby, Illinois with his wife Mary and children Sarah and Daniel. His real estate value was $200, and the census reported his place of birth as Tennessee.[3]

In February 1852, Leonard and his wife, Mary Ann, were listed in a petition submitted by William F. Tull, the executor of the estate of Mary Ann's father, Daniel Davis, dec'd, in Shelby County Court.[4]
In the 1855 Illinois state census [Leonard] was in Shelby, Illinois. The household included 4 males (3 under 10 and one 30-40, and 2 females (1 under 10 and 1 20-30. Leonard was reported as a militia member. He owned livestock valued at $200 and had produced 31 pounds of wool in the past year.[5]
In the 1860 census Leonard (age 42) was a farmer born in Illinois, renting in South Division (Rd Township), Shelby, Illinois, with a personal estate valued at $575[6]

Leonard was enumerated [Line 26] on the 18 July 1860 US Census Agricultural Schedule in Richland, Shelby, Illinois. He owned 40 unimproved acres, and the cash value of his farm was $800.[7]
In the 1865 (July) Illinois State census, Leonard resided in Richland, Shelby, Illinois in a household of eight people. The tickmarks in this census were as follows females: 1 under 10, 1 over 10 and under 20, and 1 over 30 and under 40; males: 4 over 10 and under 20, 1 over 40 and under 50.[8]
According to the Administrator's record, Leonard died intestate Nov. 17, 1865 in Shelby County, Illinois, survived by his widow and administratrix, Mary Ann (Davis) Scroggins, and children and heirs Sarah Ann, Daniel Davis, John, Charles Wesley, William Forest, and Mary Narcissus. The court required bond in the amount of $500, and security was provided by James Storm Davis. Mary Ann signed with her mark. [9]
