Biography
Esther Jane (Janie ?) Self was born in Tennessee, January 31,. 1879, probably in Green County. In 1880, when Hugh and Happy. Self moved to McDonald County, Missouri, they brought their. daughter, Janie, with them. Janie had an older sister, Lillie,. and a brother, Frank, was born after they came to Missouri. They lived in Bethpage, Missouri, where Hugh was postmaster and storekeepper.
Grandma was known to everyone as "Janie" She was the only mother my father knew, as his mother died a few days after he was born and from that point on he was raised by Grandma.
