Charles Selmes migrated from England to New South Wales.
Charles was born in 1814 and baptised 29th December 1814 at St Mary, Rye, Sussex, England, the son of Simeon Selmes (baker) and Ann Selmes[1][2] .
Charles Samuel [sic] Selmes, bachelor of Patrick's Plains, New South Wales, Australia married Hellen MacGreggor, spinster of Morpeth, New South Wales on the 8th March 1841 at the parish of Whittingham, in the County of Northumberland, New South Wales, Australia. Witnessed by Andrew Graham & Catherine Graham[3]
Charles was occupied as a baker[4] and lived at Armidale, New South Wales, Australia[5].
On the 15th Janaury 1858 Charles was charged for drunkenness and was fined 10s or 24 hours confinement. Just a few days later on the 19th January 1858, Charles' son Robert was charged with stealing vegetables from the next door neighbour's garden wand was sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment with hard labour.
The offence was proved by the evidence of Harriet Bligh, who detected t he boy pulling a quantity of onions in Mr. Bligh's garden and throwing them over the fence which divides the premises of his father from those of the prosecutor......Mr. Bligh in addressing the Court on the evidence, stated that the present was a series of thefts ...and that he had been compelled to bring the boy before the court, as the character of the parents was so notoriously bad that his amendment was hopeless if left in their charge"[6]
In 1872, Charles offered a reward of ten shillings to anyone knowing the whereabouts of his brothers Alfred and Gillinger Selmes, sons of Simon Selmes of Rye, Sussex, England[5]
Charles died in 1894 in New South Wales, Australia[7]

Research Notes
Charles acquired the middle name of Simon after he emigrated, as many immigrants appear to take on a middle name. He was not given a middle name at baptism, and unlikely used a middle name whilst in England.
