Martha (Sessions) Smoot was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.
Biography
Martha was born on September 22, 1835 in Newry, Oxford, Maine, United States. She was the daughter of Perrigrine Sessions and Julia Ann Killgore/Kilgore, the oldest of Perrigrine's reported 55 children.[1][2][3]
Her father became an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints shortly before she was born, with her mother following suit a year later. Martha's family moved to Missouri when she was very young, arriving around November of 1836 or 1837. They left Missouri for Illinois in February 1839 and were living in the city of Nauvoo by 1840.[1]
Martha Ann was baptized into the LDS church on September 21, 1843.[3]
Martha's mother Julia died in January 1845. Later that year, her father married sisters Lucina and Mary Call as polygamous wives.[1]
In early 1846, Martha's family left Nauvoo for Winter Quarters, Nebraska.[1]
On June 5, 1847, she set out west for Utah with the Daniel Spencer and Perrigrine Sessions pioneer company, traveling with her father, his two wives, her younger brother Carlos, and her paternal grandparents David and Patty Sessions. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on September 24, 1847.[4]
Martha married William Cochran Adkinson Smoot on January 29, 1852 in Salt Lake, Utah.[3]
She died on January 12, 1877 in Sugar House, Salt Lake, Utah, apparently from complications following a birth.[6][2][3]
