Max was born in 1932 in Klamath Falls, Oregon,[4] the fourth of 4 sons born to Robert Shafer and Beatrice Moen Shafer. His parents died of pneumonia when he was 4, and the four brothers were sent to separate homes.[Note 1] About age 6 Max went to live with Frank and Mae Linhart to work on their farm.[10,11,12] He attended school in Sandy, Oregon.[11]
When Max was 13 or 14, his brother Lloyd took him to Spokane, Washington,[12] and there he attended high school.[7] At age 18 [or earlier], he enlisted in the U. S. Navy,[6,12] and served from 1950 to 1954.[11] Around this time, he married Donna Hawley, whom he met in California and in 1952 they had a daughter. Max and Donna divorced in 1962.[5]
In 1967 Max married Dolores Jean Insteness Paffile in Lewiston, Idaho.[3] Four years later, on January 4, 1971, he entered into his third marriage, to Ardis Maurine (Currey) Graham.[8,11]
Max moved to Lewiston, Idaho in 1954.[11] He worked for Potlach Corp., worked as a car salesman, and since 1968 as a tavern operator.[11]
Max died in 1978 of cancer at age 46 in Lewiston, Idaho after a 5-year battle with the disease.[1,4,6,9,11]
His obituary[11] identifies survivors as his wife, daughter Kathryn Hansen, three stepsons, Wayne, Bob and Waldo Link, and his brother Lloyd Shafer of Palouse.
1. Based on the 1940 census, Robert was sent to live with his uncle George in Powell Butte, Oregon; Norman with an aunt and her husband in Pine Forest, Oregon; and Max, age 7 in 1940, is shown as a "boarder" with Frank and Kvetena Linhard in Sandy, Oregon. Reference 9 reports that as an orphan, he was taken by a Bohemian couple, the Linharts, who had a farm in Linhart Butte, 7.5 miles southeast of Sandy, Oregon. Since Lloyd is not found with any of his brothers in the 1940 census, he perhaps was sent to a fourth family.
2. In the genealogy shown on web page http://www.chrisman.org/pedigree/out2.htm, Max is shown as an [adopted] son of Frank and Kvetena Linhard. However, his daughter reports that the Linhards did not adopt him.[12]
