MARY ELIZABETH SHAFER / SHAFFER was born in 1822 in Perry County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Jonathan Shaffer (aka Shafer) and Polly Reissinger (aka Mary)

It appears that Jonathan, Mary and family left Perry County, Pennsylvania sometime between 1841 and 1844. They resided apparently for a time in Mahoning County, Ohio where daughter, Frances "Fannie/Fanny", was born. By 11 July 1850 they were residing in Champion Township, Trumbull County, Ohio, but Mary Elizabeth is not enumerated.

Samuel Shafer submitted an intended marriage application for Joseph Reed & Samuel's sister, Elizabeth Shafer/Shaffer, on 28 April 1852 in Trumbull County, Ohio. The couple, Joseph Reed and Elizabeth Shaffer, were married 29 April 1852 in Trumbull County, Ohio, USA. The marriage official was H. L. Rutan, J.P. and record was filed: 11 May 1852.[3] Joseph was known as "Cap" Reed according to his daughter, Mary Ann (Reed) Hancock, and her descendants.
