Michael was born on 30 March 1870, at Roma, Queensland, the son of Thomas Shanahan and Ellen Mary (Delany)[1]
Major Michael Shanahan received the Distinguished Service Order.
Major Michael Shanahan, 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment: For distinguished service in holding on to his outpost line till the last possible moment on the night of 3rd August 1916, at Romani. He brought several wounded men out of action under heavy fire and was himself wounded.[2][3]
On August 3, 1916 Michael was wounded and subsequently lost his left leg.
The story of "Bill the Bastard", (Australia's greatest war horse) includes the story of Major Michael Shanahan's relationship with the horse during WWI and his ability as a horse whisperer.[4]
He married Charlotte Ellen Lambkin in West Ham, Essex, England in 1918[5]
He married Charlotte Dunstan on 29 Jan 1896 in Roma, Queensland, Australia. They did not have any children but adopted his son by Lilian Frances Schrimpf.
Michael passed away on 12 October 1964 aged 94 years at Brisbane, Queensland.[6]
He is buried in the Mount Thompson Memorial Gardens - Columbarium 12, Section 13[7]
