It appears that Shirah was originally spelled Scheurer, pronounced Shirer in the southern German dialect. Hans Cunrad Conrad Scheurer migrated to Richland County, SC in 1749. My ancestor Charles Shirah 1810-1849 and Lurana Medlin Shirah, as well as his brother Jacob Jr moved their family to Houston County, GA in the 1830s, later to Macon County area of Oglethorpe, GA. His oldest brother, Jacob Shirah Jr. remained in Houston County. They had 7 boys and 3 girls. Four of the boys were lost in the Civil War in VA and MD. Their son Nicholas (1838-1908) is my ancestor; subsequently George, Cornelius (Neal) and Wallace (my father).
