A well known residence of Eaton, Delaware co, Ind., is a native of this county and state, having been born near the village of Tabor, a son of Joseph W. Shirey and Susan (Bowers) Shirey, his birth occurring on December 24, 1860. His father was a native of Roanoke Co, Va., his mother coming from the same place and they were married in 1855 and were among the early pioneers of Delaware co. Joseph W. Shirey located near the village of Tabor, where he engaged in farming and followed this occupation all of his life until 1888, when he and removed to Hanover, Jefferson co., where they now reside. Mr. and Mrs. Shirey were the parents of nine: Lillie, L. E. , Charles O., W. B. , W. E., W. A., N. C. , J. P. and Hazel. Luther Emery Shirey was reared in his native county and there attended the common school, and supplemented this education with three terms spent in the Danville normal school. For the following four years he engaged in teaching, after which he engaged in farming in this county, continuing the latter occupation until 1890, when he went into partnership with Mr. Sharp with who he continued business until April 1893. Mr. Shirey married in Muncie, Ind. March 29, 1883, Miss Julia Stradling, who was born March 7, 1862, a daughter of William Stradling, to which union were born three children Claire, Ivy and Winogene. Mrs. Shirey died January 1, 1892 and remains at rest in the Collins Cemetery west of Muncie. Both Mr. and Mrs. Shirey were members of the First Presbyterian Church.

Luther E. Shirey, 76, widely-known farmer, died at 9:25 o'clock last night at his home, three miles northeast of the city on the Shirey road, following a one week's illness. He was a life-long resident of Delaware County and was born in Salem Township on December 24, 1865. Mr. Shirey had been actively associated with farm organizations of the county and had been an elder in the First Presbyterian Church 31 year. He served as a member of the Muncie Public Library board for eight years.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Annie Shirey; three daughters, Mrs. W.S. Puntenney, Mrs. J.C. Ryan, and Miss Ivy Shirey, all of Delaware County; three brothers, the Rev. Charles O. Shirey of Fort Wayne, the Rev. W.E. Shirey of Hanover, Ind., and the Rev. N.C. Shirey of Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. L.E. Danley of Muncie, and Mrs. Hazel Rice of Gainsville, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
A brother, Walter A. Shirey, former county commissioner, died May 6.
