Should not be conflated with the Isabel Dalgliesh/Dalgleish wife of William Dalgleish/Dalgliesh who both show in the Scotland census returns of 1841, 1851, etc, because THIS Isabel, her husband, William, and their children were resident in Van Diemen's Land, later Tasmania, from 1833 on.
Isabel Short was born about 1806, in Scotland.
It is not known by what name she preferred to be known, but Isabel's name is often shown in records as Isabella, and Isabelle.
After the Banns had been read the requisite number of times, Isabel Short and William Dalgleish, Stonemason, were married on the 11th October 1825, in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh.[1]
With at least three known children in tow (one born in transit, whilst they were passing through Liverpool, Lancashire, England, where they finally boarded ship), Isabel and William packed up and emigrated to the Colonies, landing in Hobart Town aboard the Edward Coulsen, on the 9th October 1833.[2]
Once in their new home, the family grew with another eight known children. (Unsourced online trees claim up to 17 children.) Their one daughter, Margaret, died at just two months. Another daughter, Ann, married the notable Shipwright, David Drake in New South Wales.
Isabel Dalgleish née Short passed away on the 26th May 1881, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The official record* is in direct contradiction of the newspaper announcement as placed by her family, wherein she is correctly named as Isabel.[3]
* The informant on the official record was Alex James Clark, undertaker, and he has her as "Mary Ann", who "died Argyll street, licenced victualler's widow" (William had been a stonemason). He gives the cause of death as "decrepitude". It is this mis-naming that has many an online tree show Isabel as Mary Ann Isabel, or Isabel Mary Ann, when the only name on all official documents – other than the death record – is Isabel.
