Biography

John William Shoults, was born March 29, 1842, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, a son of Jacob Shoults and Mary (Burns) Shoults. john's mother died between 1846 and 1850, and John and his three siblings were taken in by his maternal Aunt Margaret and her husband, Alexander Bailey. All four children are found on the United States Census of 1850. ^[1] When Margaret (Burns) Bailey and Alexander moved to Santa Barbara, California, they took their two nieces and two nephews with them.

On November 22, 1869, John married Mary Emma Alvord, born October 22, 1853, in Marysville, California, a daughter of Charles Elbridge Alvord. ^[2] John William died December 12, 1924, and is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in Glendale, Los Angeles county, California, in the Resthaven section. ^[3]
