According to the info furnished by Michelle Wiseman and Anita McCray, Mel is Melmuth P. Simmons b. 1823 d. 9/20/1863 at the Battle of Chicamauga. His wife was Mary Eubanks and as of the 1860 Census they had 7 children. One of the children was Melvina Simmons b. 1852 that matches with the wife of James Newton Cockrum, who was my great grandfather.
