George Slingsby was born about 1847[1] at Aldington, Kent, England[2][3] and baptised on the 7th March 1847 at St. Martin, Aldington, Kent, England, the son of John Slingsby[4] (labourer) and Mary Slingsby of Aldington[5][6]
On the 27th July 1867, George married Amy Beal at St. Mary, Westwell, Kent, England. George Slingsby, 20, bachelor, labourer of Aldington, son of John Slingsby (labourer) and Amy Beal, spinster of Westwell, daughter of Thomas Beal (labourer). Witnessed by William Austen & Ann Beal[4]
In 1887, George and Amy's only daughter Jane died aged 19 years at Margate, Kent.
George's wife Amy died in 1897.
By 1901, George was living with Mary Appleton as if they were married, however no marriage can be found. It is unlikely Mary's son Alfred Thomas was George's son as Alfred Thomas was born on the 6th May 1897, the same quarter that George's wife Amy died. It would also be unusual for a son to not be named George, or have George as a middle name*.
On the 26th August 1902, George was admitted to the Lunatic Asylum at Chartham, Kent, England, where he died on the 9th March 1904[7][8].

Alfred Thomas Appleton was living in a children's home for orphaned and destitute children in 1911 and was sent to Canada in 1911. However, when he enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force in 1916, he gave his mother's name as Mary Appleton and her address as Herne, Kent, England, suggesting she had not actually married George Slingsby and that she was still alive in 1916.
When Alfred Thomas Appleton marries Gladys Marion Rogers in Ontario, Canada in 1926, he gives his father's name as Alfred Thomas Appleton [sic] rather than George Slingsby.
George would have been 57 years old when he died in 1904, but as he was in an institution, it is unlikely his true age was known, as he had no next of kin, his only child having died in 1887 and his wife Amy having died in 1897.
