Biography
Edmund Smart was born on 18 Sep 1831 in Moulton, Northamptonshire, England, son of William Smart (1806 - 1853) and Sarah Willson (1810 - 1873).
His family emigrated on the Randolph to Lyttleton, Canterbury, arriving in December 1880.
Edmund was 22 years old and his bride Sarah Jane Cox, aged 18 when they married on the 3 November 1853. The wedding was held in St Michael and All Angels, Oxford Terrace, Christchurch. Their children were:
- Clara Jane (Smart) Pentecost (1854 - 1938)
- Ernest Smart (~1856 - 1930)
- Alice Maria (Smart) Pope (1856 - 1939)
- Alfred Smart (1858 - )
- Frances Agnes Emma (Smart) Beken (1860 - 1946)
- Conway Lucas Smart (1864 - 1872).
Edmund (67) married Jane Susannah Walker (~55) (1843 - 1918) on 25 Apr 1899 in Wesleyan Methodist Ch, Christchurch.
Edmund died on 13 Apr 1919 in Ashburton, Canterbury, New Zealand aged 87.

I will investigate further, newspaper account from time of his death says born 1831, census in 1841 would suggest possibly 1833.
