Augusta was born in 1849. She was the daughter of George Smith and Ann Varty. [1]
UK Census Date 1851: Living at Edenhall, Cumberland, England with her parents and baby brother George. Aged 2. Also in the household were 9 servants comprised of housemaids, nursemaids, cowmen and farm servants as her father was a Farmer of 240 acres.
In the Census of 1861 Augusta is now 12 years of age and is recorded at Edenhall with her mother and younger brother Jonathan. Her father and brother George were visiting her uncle in London. Augusta has a 22 year old Scottish Governess by the name of Barbara R L Lindsley.
Her father passed away in 1879. Augusta continued to live with her mother and siblings. Her mother passed away in 1908.
She wrote three novels: The Fawcetts and Garods (1886) under the pseudonym "Säimath," Matthew Tindale (1891), and She was his Wife (1936). Reviewers found her first two novels good imitations of George Eliot and Prime Minister William Gladstone read and approved of Matthew Tindale.[3]
Residence: April 2, 1911 - Nandana, Penrith, Cumberland, England. Living with her unmarried siblings Amy and Jonathan. Aged 62.
Augusta never married, lived her whole life in Cumberland, and passed away in 1941 at the grand age of 92.

Her Will was Probated on 26 August 1941 to Amy Varty-Smith (spinster), Thomas Smith of no occupation and John James Reed (solicitor). Effects: £3,882, 14s. 7d.
