Biography

Hollis Walton Smith was born in 1915, the son and youngest child of Charles Smith and Ella Walton.

The 1920 US census for East Dixfield, Maine, part of Wilton, lists the residents of a farm located on the East Dixfield Road leading to Wilson Lake as Henry C Smith (72), a farmer, his wife Lora [sic] J (62), son Charles C (41), a farmer, daughter-in-law Ella B (39), and grandsons Lendall D (14), Carold [sic] C (11), Iola F (7) and Hollis W (4). Lendall did not attend school within the past year. The farm is owned by Henry and Laura.

The 1930 US census for East Dixfield, Wilton, Maine conducted on 8 May 1930 lists the residents of a farm on the East Dixfield Road as Charles C Smith (52), a general farmer, his wife Ella W (51), son Harold C (22), a farm laborer, his daughter-in-law Audrey C (20), a housekeeper for a private family, daughter Iola F (17), a student in a public school, and son Hollis W (14), also a public school student. They own their farm. Charles married at age 26, Ella at age 24, Harold at age 22, and Audrey at age 20.

The 1940 US census for East Dixfield, Wilton, Maine lists residents of a farm as Hollis Smith (24), a farmer, his wife Cielia [sic] E (24) and their daughter Laura L (3). They own their farm valued at $1000, and it is the same place where Hollis and Celia lived in 1935.

The 1950 US census for Wilton, Maine lists the residents of a farm located on the East Dixfield Road as head of household Hollis W Smith (34), a farmer, his wife Celia W (34), their children Laura L (13), Calvin C (9) and Leslie L (5), as well as his father Charles C Smith (70), and mother Ella N [sic] (69). All were born in Maine.

Hollis was well known throughout the Maine agricultural world as a breeder of award-winning cattle and a presence at the state agricultural fairs showing his livestock. He died in 2002 and is buried at the East Dixfield Cemetery, East Dixfield, Maine.
