John Smith was sentenced to fourteen years transportation for stealing money. He arrived in Sydney in 1839 aboard the Kent. His trade was given as footman and indoor servant.
In 1849, John Smith married Charlotte Everingham, their marriage taking place in the Church of England, Lower Hawkesbury Parish, New South Wales, Australia. [1]
They celebrated 50 years of marriage in February, 1899.

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, of Paradise Point, celebrated their golden wedding on the 6th inst. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are considered to be about the oldest couple on the river, and are quite hale and hearty. [2]
Five months later, on 12th July, 1899, John was widowed.
He died 12th September, 1901, at Ashfield, New South Wales. He died of Bronchitis.

DEATHS
SMITH-September 12 at Ashfield, John Smith, late of Lower Portland, aged 88 years. [3]
His remains are interred the West Portland cemetery with his wife and other family members. His portion of their tall monumental headstone states John was born 6th June, 1813, and died 12th September, 1901.[4]
