Biography

Rosa (later Rose) Smith was born in 1862 at Crawley in Oxfordshire. She was the daughter of William Smith and his wife Elizabeth, born Elizabeth Winfield. ^{[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]}

In 1871 Rosa Smith was living in West End in Witney with her grandparents [her mother's parents] Joseph and Elizabeth Winfield. Her age was given as 8, implying a birth date in 1862 or 1863. Her birthplace was given as Crawley, Oxfordshire. She was at school. ^[2]

In 1881 Rose was living in a cottage at Crawley with her widowed mother Elizabeth and her other children. Her age was given as 18, implying a birth date in 1862 or 1863. Her birthplace was given as Crawley, Oxfordshire. She was a feeder in a blanket mill. ^[3]

Stephen Weaver, aged 18, a labourer, of Crawley, son of Stephen Weaver, labourer; and Rose Smith, aged 19, of Crawley, daughter of William Smith (deceased), labourer; were married at St John's church in the parish of Hailey with Crawley on 11 December 1881. ^[4]
