Benjamin Snow [1]
Birth Year: abt 1737 (sister born Aug. 1738)
Death Date: March 1807
Death Place: Buckstown, Hancock, Maine District, Massachusetts, USA [2]
Age at Death: 69 = born 1737/38.

The "Rowell Family Tree" on Ancestry.com says that Benjamin Snow was the son of Stephen Snow Jr. (1708-1773) and his wife, Rebecca (Snow) Snow (1710-bef.1773), whose father was named "Benjamin". As Eastham records are only available by paid $ subscriptions on Ancestry.com, more research is needed to confirm this parentage. Old Man Kew's usually-reliable RootsWeb profile for this man does not name his parents.

It's known that this Benjamin Snow, born in 1737-1738 on Cape Cod (Barnstable County, Mass. Bay), married Bathsheba (Thomas) Snow (abt.1742-) on 9 February 1760 in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay, New England. The couple lived in Eastham for the first dozen years of their marriage, then, after 1773 (Stephen Snow, Jr., died in 1773), they moved north first to Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine, and then to Buckstown (now Bucksport), Hancock County, Maine. Until 1820 Maine was a part of Massachusetts. Their last 4 daughters, including twin girls: Hannah & Anna Snow, were all born in Maine.

Old Man Kew assigns only 5 children to the couple: [3]

  1. Reuben Snow: Birth: Abt 1762 in Massachusetts. Death: 10 Oct 1842 in Bucksport, Maine
  2. Bathsheba Snow: Birth: est. 1764 in Massachusetts.
  3. Lucy Snow: Birth: Est. 1770 in "uncertain" [ b: 1780 on Ancestry]
  4. Ruth Snow: Birth: 8 Sep 1774 in Gorham, Maine.
  5. Anna Snow: Birth: 27 Dec 1777 in Gorham, Maine.

The Rowell Tree on Ancestry.com adds 3 more daughters:

  1. Jennie Snow: Birth: 1668 - Death: 1842
  2. Mary Snow: Birth: Est. 1770
  3. Hannah: Birth: 27 Dec 1777 - Death: 1800 in Maine

A published history of Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine, states the following:[4]

Benjamin Snow, said to have come from Barnstable, bought in November 1773 of Daniel Eldridge a part of the hundred acre lot, 58, and about this time moved here with his family, consisting of his mother, wife and seven children. He was living in a part of Capt. Eldrige's house when it burned in 1774. His wife's name was Bathsheba _________ [Unknown]. They have the births of two children recorded in Gorham:
  1. Ruth, b: Sept. 8, 1774
  2. Hannah, b: Dec. 27, 1777; m. Samuel Whitney, Aug 24, 1798
Among other children in this family, born before coming to Gorham, were probably
  1. Bathsheba, m. Nathaniel Edwards, Sept. 29, 1786
  2. Jenny, m. Michael Philbrick, Jr., of Standish, Sept 4, 1788
  3. Mary, m. Joseph Hodgdon, Feb. 24, 1789
  4. Lucy. m. Israel Hodgdon.
Benjamin Snow left the town about 1794, going to Orrington, and from there moving to Bucksport.

Benjamin Snow was reported as having just passed away in Buckstown (i.e., Bucksport), Hancock, Maine, USA in the 4 March 1807 edition of the Columbian Centinel newspaper in Maine. He was 69 years old. [1] No burial information has been found for him.
