William was born about 1819 in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England. His parents were John Sokell and Mary. We know that he had two sisters, Mary Sokell born in 1816 and Ann Sokell born in 1821. He also had two brothers James Sokell, born 1824 and Robert Sokell, born 1826. He probably had other brothers and sisters but no record of them has been found. William was baptised on 3 June 1921 at St Mary's Church, Barnsley, Yorkshire.[1][2]
Some time between 1826 and 1938 his mother must have died, because in May 1838 his father married Mary Crossland.
On 22 Jan 1839 both his sisters were married at All Saints Church, Darfield, Yorkshire, Mary to John Ogden and Ann to William Brook. [3]
In 1841 at the time of the census William was living in Worsbrough, Yorkshire with his father and step mother and his brother Robert. William and his father were both working as weavers. [4]

On 30 Aug 1843 William married Elizabeth Taylor at All Saints Church, Darfield. [5] Their children were George Sokell, Joseph Sokell, Sarah Sokell, Hannah Sokell, Ann Wilson (Sokell) Siddall, Augusta (Sokell) Whitaker, Fred Sokell, James Sokell, Herbert Sokell and Mary Sokell.
In 1851 William, Mary, three children and a lodger, George Cawthorne were all living at Wilkinson Houses, Worsbrough, Yorkshire. William was a weaver, as was their lodger, George Cawthorne. [6]

The marriage certificate of his daughter Augusta Sokell and James Whitaker states that William was a Colliery manager at the time of the marriage in 1875. [9]

On 8 Jul 1883 Elizabeth died. [11] She was buried in Wombwell Cemetery on 11July 1883. [12]
Just over a year later William married a widow Martha Rogers (formally Guest), on 23 August 1884. [13]
In 1891 William was still a time keeper at the mine an living with Martha at Wombwell Main. [14]

By 1901 had retired and the couple had move to Alms Houses in Summer Lane, Wombwell. [15]

William died on 9 June 1902. [16] He was buried in Wombwell Cemetery on 13 Jun 1902. [17]
