Biography

William Solomon was born in 1777 in Montreal, son of Ezekiel Solomon and Elizabeth Dubois. He died in Penetanguishene and was buried Jan 27, 1857[1]

From source above: "he evidently lived for some time with his parents on Mackinac Island (Mich.). There he and an Ojibwa girl, Agibicocoua, had an illegitimate daughter, who was baptized on 28 July 1796. In 1797, 1799, and 1800 he fathered three other illegitimate children. Shortly thereafter he appears to have married Marguerite Johnston, who had been born on Mackinac Island. They were to have ten children." He died in Penetanguishene and was buried in the cemetery of St. Anne's church, Surviving him were a large family and his second wife, Josephine Légris, whom he had married late in life.

Based on dates, the four children he had with Agibicocoua were: Sophie, Hubert, Henri, Marie-Louise. All other children (should be 10) were with Marguerite Johnston. Since he married late in life to Josephine Legris, it is likely they did not have children. (Bourque-573 16:46, 12 October 2018 (UTC))

He and his family moved to Penetanguishshene in 1828 where he subsequently died and was buried.[2]

He became an interpreter for the British government during the War of 1812 and served for 56 years.[3]

Marriages

  • 1. Agibicocoua - Indian woman, not married, 4 children
  • 2. Marguerite Johnston - married about 1802, daughter of John Johnston of Sault Ste. Marie, and had 10 children[4][5]
  • 3. Josephine Legris - married late in life.[6]

Death

Other than the job starting in the war of 1812 and he served for 56 years, I have not found an actual death date for William (Bourque-573 15:27, 12 October 2018 (UTC))

Research Note

One of William's daughters married James Leramonda. Leramonda moved from Drummond Island to Penatanguishene in 1929[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Solomon-2334 and Solomon-940 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, name and one wife is the same. Many duplicates just created by the same person.
Bob and Gary, I think I have found most of the children of Marguerite Johnson and quite a few dates. More is possibly available, especially from their life in ontario. Good luck with all the merges of duplicates!
