He was a musician, providing music for various events in Garston for about 50 years. Typical was a function to welcome a newly-married couple to the district[24]. Henry sang, then was part of a band (which included his brothers Jack and Ernest) providing the music for the dance which went until midnight.
A surprise party was put on at his home in Garston for his 70th birthday on 29 April 1939[25]. Tributes were paid for his service in supplying music for socials and dances for about 50 years. His veterinary expertise in assisting sick animals in all parts of the district was noted too. He had proved himself a kind neighbour and a generous host. A list of family and friends present was given.
Henry died on 29 July 1949 aged 80 years[26]. An obituary was published in the Southland News[27]. He was buried at Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill, Block/Plot: General - 33 / 374 on 1 August[28]. The inscription reads[29]:
In remembrance of Henry Beloved husband of Frances L Soper
Died 29th July 1949
