William was the son of Green Sorrell and Susannah Barnett Sorrell. He was born in Georgia in about 1823.
In the 1830 U. S. Census [1] the family of Green Sorrel (sic) was living in Meriwether County, Georgia. William would have been the male between five and nine. There were seven other children in the family. There were also three slaves in the household.
William's father purchased eighty acres of land in Chambers County, Alabama from the Montgomery Land Office on April 10, 1837. [2] By the time of the 1840 U. S. Census, Green and most of his grown children were living in Chambers County.
On November 16, 1844, William married Sarah A. Pannel in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. [3] Tallapoosa and Chambers Counties share a common border so the distance was not great.
William's father, Green, died in 1843. In estate papers filed in 1846 William B. Sorrell was listed among the heirs. [4] The will was finalized in letters of settlement on June 9, 1851 in Chambers County. Among the court orders was the statement, 2nd That said Executors pay over to William B. Sorrell the sum of five hundred and sixty four 0475/100 dollars his distributive share of said estate, for which execution may issue. [5]
The 1850 U. S. Census (25 Nov 1850) agriculture schedule showed William B. Sorrell with no land but $5 worth of farm implements and machinery, one horse, two milch cows and three other cattle; twelve sheep, and nine swine. The livestock was valued at $140. His produce included 100 bushels of Indian corn, the 400 pound bales of cotton; 54 bushels of sweet potatoes, and 25 pounds of butter. The values of homemade manufactures was $95. The value of animals slaughtered or sold for slaughter was $16.
On June 9, 1851 letters of settlement were issued on the estate of William's father, Green Sorrell. [6] 2nd That said Executors pay over to William B. Sorrell the sum of five hundred and sixty four 0475/100 dollars his distributive share of said estate, for which execution may issue.
Sarah died between 1856 and 1858 based on the fact that William was remarried to Henrietta Gardner on December 21, 1858 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. [7]
On March 1, 1858, William "of Chambers County" bought 120 acres in Township 23N, Tallapoosa County, Alabama from the Montgomery land office.[8] In the 1860 U. S. Census (18 August 1860) [9] the family was in New Site, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. William was thirty-seven years old with real estate valued at $1500 and personal estate valued at $3100. Henrietta was thirty. Also in the family were six children from William's first marriage: Mary J. age 14, Ruthy age 12, Georgia age 10, Green W. age 8, Permelia age 6, and George age 4. Henrietta and William had one son, Wesley, who was six months old.
William bought eighty acres more in Township 23N, Tallapoosa County from the Montgomery Land Office on February 1, 1861. [10]
In the 1870 U. S. Census (10 Aug 1870) [11] The William had real estate valued at $200 and personal estate of $200. He could not read or write. The children in the family included Jane, age 21, and Ruth, age 19. William and Henrietta should have three children that are not listed with the family and have not been located in the census. Wesley would have been about ten, Dove R about six and Thomas about one year old.
In the 1880 U. S. Cenus (19 Jun 1880) [12] the family was listed in the "Cow Pens Beat" still in the Poplar Springs, Tallapoosa County, Alabama where they had previously been living. It may be a different location or just have a new designation. In the family with W. B. Sorrell and Henrietta were: Jane age 32, Rutha age 30, Dove R. age 16, and "Bigah" (maybe Thomas) age 11. Also, a niece, Gillam Posa, age eleven. Her family is unknown.
I have not located William in an 1840 census. There is not an eighteen year old in Green's family. He may have been living with one of his siblings. Since there are no names listed in the 1840 census it is difficult to be sure.
The three children of Henrietta and William are missing from the 1870 U. S. Census. They must have been staying with another family, probably relatives, but their location is unknown. They do appear in the 1880 with their parents.
