Notes

Note N77.

From Edward Nolan: "I wrote to the Archives Center in Quebec and got the straight story. He was born March 26, 1835 in Yamaska, Quebec. He was baptised the next day at St-Michel-de-Yamaska. His birth name was Louis Prudent Souci. His parents were Jean-Baptist Souci and Francoise Belanger. His father was born in 1794, mother in 1798. They were both born in L'islet, Quebec. They were married on October 20,1818 in St-Jean-Port-Joli, which is near L'islet. If you go to www.familysearch.org (Mormon Site) you can trace his mothers family back to France in the 1500's. Interesting to note that all the information given on his marriage application in 1875 is wrong.(Parents names, fathers country of birth, Predores place of birth).".

The MA Marriage Register (first m. to Delia Fitzpatrick in 1864) confirms that "Prudent Souci" was b. Canada. At the time of his marriage to her, he was a mariner, age 27, and she was 18. This would place his birthdate in 1836-1837. However, his death certificate yields a birthdate of 1843-1844. The 1880 U.S. Census would suggest a birthdate of 1836.

Vital records and census records give a confused picture of his origins. His daughter Mary Agnes Stacey's entry in the MA Birth Register indicated Burlington, Chittenden Co., VT, as his birthplace; however, his marriage entry in the MA Marriage Register gives "Moscow, Can." as his birthplace. A second entry in the MA Marriage Register gives "Canada" as his place of birth. Further confusion arises from his family's record in the 1880 MA Census, which identifies Vermont as his place of birth. The same is given by the 1870 MA Census. Mary Agnes Stacey's death certificate lists Montpelier, VT, as the place of birth. No VT vital records confirm a birth in VT.

In 1870 (MA Census) his occupation was listed as "works for Blacksmith", and his name is spelled "Pleodore". His first marriage was to a woman of Irish birth, Delia F. [?]. With her he had at least one child, Charles H. Stacey, who was three years old in 1870. At the time of his second marriage to Ellen McGovern, he had the occupation of blacksmith, and he was a resident of Everett, Middlesex Co., MA.

At the time of Ellen F. Stacey's birth (22 October 1877), "Preadore," an engineer, lived in Cambridge with his family. Vermont is confirmed as his birthplace.

At the time of Mary Agnes Stacey's birth (18 November 1879) he was a resident of Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA, and had the occupation of engineer (according to Mary Agnes Stacey's entry in the MA Birth Register).

According to the 1880 U. S. Census, his address in this year was 2 Broadway, Cambridgeport. His age is given as 44, yielding a birthdate of 1835-1836[!]. His father is listed as having been born in France. His wife is identified as having been born in New Brunswick. At this time their children Charles (13), George F. (8), Walter (6), Ellen (2), and Mary (6 mos.) lived with them. He was an engineer at the time.

At the time of his daughter Josephine's birth in 1884, "Theodore," an engineer, lived in Cambridge with his family.

In 1887 Predore worked as an engineer at the corner of Third Street and Potter Street in Cambridge, according to a Cambridge, MA directory.

At the time of his son Joseph's birth in 1890, "Predore," an engineer, lived in Cambridge at 87 Main Street with his family. He still worked at the corner of Third Street and Potter Street in Cambridge.

1900 Census: Predore Stacy lived at 10 Davis St., Cambridge. He was 57, b. Mar 1843 in VT. This is next door to his new son-in-law Herman and daughter Mary.

1910 Census: Predore was 66 years old, was in his second marriage, and had been married to Ellen McGovern for 33 years. The census states that he had seven children, of which six were living. He was born in Vermont. His father's nationality is given as "France French," while his mother's is given as "Fr.[?] French". He spoke English, and was working as a watchman for a biscuit company "of his own account". His residence was 10 Davis St. in Cambridge, next door to his son-in-law Herman Erhardt and daughter Mary at 8 Davis St.

According to his death certificate (MA Deaths, 1912, vol. 25, p. 354): He died at his residence, 10 Davis St. in Cambridge, of "Dilatation of Heart" with "Chronic Myocarditis" as a contributory cause. The undertaker was James F. Mullen. He was 68 years, 0 months, and 0 days old (suggesting that his exact birthdate was unknown). His father is identified as Edward Stacey, b. in Burlington, VT (his mother and her birthplace were "unknown"), but this conflicts with his marriage record, where his parents' names are given as John and Mary.
