Working on this-- See Slaves of Hezekiah F Erwin for progress. Judy Bramlage, 12/3/2023
Note siblings Thomas W Erwin and Ann E Erwin appear to have treated their set of enslaved people as a shared labor force. In 1860 Ann Eliza was living with her grandfather Thomas Winston and her brother Thomas W Erwin was listed nearby on the same census page. Thaddeus is an example of one of the enslaved person who was noted on an 1863 tax worksheet for Thomas Winston. On this document, there was a notation 6 slaves, A. E. Erwin.
As of 17 Sep 2022, this is predominantly a copy of information found there.
The association of this set of people with Cookshay plantation comes from the book Sold Down the River: Slavery in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley of Alabama and Georgia by Anthony Gene Carey[1] It discussed when Cookshay was sold and also gives details of some of the enslaved people on the plantation.
* * Note to those who would seek to create profiles from this list, use the data for the enslaved persons where there is a name in the dist (distribution column). There is intentional repetition as a means of seeing the history of each person - where they were prior to this distribution, and to which family member they were distributed. * *
Hezekiah F Erwin died intestate in Troup County, Georgia in 1859.
His heirs included the following:
- His widow Mary (formerly Mary Willis Cobb),
- Thomas W Erwin, child of his first wife Mary Johnson Winston
- Ann Eliza Erwin, child of his first wife Mary Johnson Winston
- Mary Willis Erwin, child of Mary Willis Cobb.
- Howell F Erwin, child of Mary Willis Cobb.
- Lucy Cobb Erwin, child of Mary Willis Cobb.
The estate records were somewhat complex, as there were several interim inventories taken, and there were two divisions of the enslaved persons. The transcribed records on the profile of Hezekiah F Erwin provide details of this. Below is a summary of the sources used to create the following table.

E. Erwin.

It references: ... Sold Down the River: Slavery in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley of Alabama and Georgia, Anthony Gene Carey, Historic Chattahoochee Commission, University of Alabama Press, Aug 31, 2011. I’ll quote a brief passage on pages 172 – 173. It discussed when Cookshay was sold and also gives details of some of the enslaved people on the plantation.
The key paragraph that associates many of the names above with Cookshay Plantation:
Martha Jackson endeavored to keep slave families together despite estate issues, absenteeism, and a couple of long distance moves, one from Athens to Cookshay, then from Cookshay to Washington County, Georgia when Martha Jackson sold Cookshay to her son-in-law Hezekiah F. Erwin in 1850. (Erwin was by then the widower of the younger Martha Jackson, whose early death had left a child behind.)…”
