History
Originally a burial place of 19th century sealers, and then in the 20th century became a whalers' cemetery.

Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) was buried at Grytviken Cemetery on 5 Mar 1922 with his head oriented south towards Antarctica instead of east. The granite gravestone was erected in 1928.
