When the first Census of the Colony of Queensland was taken on 7 April, 1861, there were males and females living in Queensland of whom males and females were from Rural Portions of Police Districts.[1] Germany was the largest foreign European contributor to Queensland's population with an undesirable, disproportionate number of females to males.[2]

Immigration Act. 38 Victoria, No. 9, which was passed by the Legislature during last Session, and became law on the 14th September, 1869.[3]

A list of principal vessels bringing immigrants and other passengers to Brisbane from January 1, 1859, to December 31, 1869 inclusive. The figures in parentheses represent the number of passengers, and the port mentioned at the end of each line the place of embarkation:[4]

Bishop Quinn's Immigration Scheme ran for a total of three years and in this time 13 ships transported some 40,000 Irish immigrants to their new lives in Brisbane. The following ships were used in the QIS; The Erin-go-Bragh, The Chatsworth, The Maryborough, The Prince Consort, The Duke of Newcastle, The Wanata, The Golden City, The Queen of the Colonies, The Hanna More, The Golden Dream, The Beejapore, The Fiery Star, and The Sunda.
