  • (1999) "McLaughlin, Perry Co PA, Richland Co OH" in Mclaughlin surname forum, 13 June 1999; web content, Genealogy.com. Although unsourced, this descendant narrative about Patrick McLaughlin is detailed as to various logic, suggesting there is a significant body of research behind the narrative. Claims Patrick served in Revolutionary War, along with possible brothers, James and William. About Daniel, the narrative suggests there is a list of heirs as of May 1830; some kind of deed action in January 1836.

They got to Bean Creek just at dark and found the bridge, built by Shaffer and Poorman. They thought to cross with the team, but Samuel Ayers said he would try it first, and accordingly walked nearly over, carefully examining the same; but as the north end was the lowest, resting on driftwood, then abundant in the creek, the poles of the bridge floated and he fell through into the water up to his waist. They then returned their horses to the wagon, and hearing the sound of the cow-bell some eighty or ninety rods north, concluded to try and cross the bridge on foot, leaving the team, and make for the cow-bell. They found it at the cabin of John Shaffer, at about eight o'clock that night, and where they stayed over night. The next morning, with the assistance of Mr. Shaffer, they fixed up the bridge and got the team over the creek, and McLaughlin and Ayers went on their way farther west, soon found themselves homes, and returned to Richland county, where they resided. They soon prepared themselves and families to come to Williams county, now Fulton. Another sister, Elizabeth [McLaughlin], came in the winter of 1837, with the family of Samuel Ayers, to their new homes in this wilderness. They were originally from Perry county. Pa. They settled each as follows: John McLaughlin on section I, town 7 north, range 4 east; Samuel Ayers on section 2, town 7 north, range 4 east; Joseph McLaughlin on section I, town 7 north, range 4 east, Ohio survey. John McLaughlin's sister, Elizabeth [McLaughlin], married Adna Reynolds. On that eventful day she did a washing in the morning, for the family, shelled, that morning also, one-half bushel of corn, and that afternoon carried it on her shoulder, through the woods, to Bird's mill, located on Mill Creek, north, got it ground, again re-shouldered and carried it home, baked the wedding cake, and was married the same evening. The distance to Bird's mill was at least two and one-half miles, making five miles to and from, for the lady to travel. This was in the fall of 1838. Rachel McLaughlin married one Porter, and now lives in Steuben county, State of Indiana. David [McLaughlin] married Libbie Rogers; he died many years ago. Joseph [McLaughlin] is living, and has raised a very fine family, and is highly respected …"

The McLaughlin family was represented in Franklin Township in 1835, when John McLaughlin, presumably brother of Daniel, came with Samuel Ayers into the township from Richland county, Ohio. They passed over the same route as Shaffer and Poorman, finding the bridge over Bean Creek, which they crossed with difficulty, eventually locating land and then returning to their Richland county homes. On May 11, 1836, Joseph McLaughlin, who was then but a boy of fifteen years, came with his mother, Isabelle (Drum) widow of Daniel McLaughlin, from Richland county, and settled on section 1, town 7 north, range 4 east, Ohio survey, that being the same section upon which was the tract John McLaughlin had entered. John McLaughlin came at the same time, or earlier. Elizabeth McLaughlin, sister of John, married Adna Reynolds. She, herself, was evidently imbued with the spirit of the pioneer, for it has been stated that upon the day of her wedding, she "did a washing in the morning, for the family; shelled that morning also one-half bushel of corn, and that afternoon carried it on her shoulder, through the woods, to Bird's mill, located on Mill Creek, north, got it ground, again reshouldered and carried it home; baked the wedding cake; and was married the same evening. She had carried the half bushel for five miles, over a difficult road, but evidently needed the flour for the wedding cake, and with the typical pioneer spirit set resolutely about accomplishing the task, with a light heart. Joseph McLaughlin became the head of a very large family. He married Mary Beaty in 1845, and they reared ten of their eleven children.

Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, Ohio Chancery Court Records, "From 1802 until 1851, when the Ohio constitution established the probate court as a separate entity, probate matters fell under the jurisdiction of each county’s common pleas court. During this period, some matters dealing with inheritance and estates were decided by the county chancery court, a court also under the jurisdiction of the county’s common pleas court. Chancery court existed in each county until 1850 to 1860 ... Chancery court provided a system of finding justice between two parties whose rights conflicted. It dealt with divorce, mortgage foreclosures, petitions to sell land, partition suits, and real property disputes."

From, William Henry Shinn, The county of Williams : a history of Williams County, Ohio ... (Madison, Wisc. : Northwestern Historical Association, 1905), 55-56; digital images, InternetArchive, "... in March, 1836, the Board of Commissioners organized the township of 'Bradie' (Brady), its boundary lines to include not only its present limits, but Millcreek township and the territory afterwards detached and annexed to Fulton county."

From, William Henry Shinn, The county of Williams : a history of Williams County, Ohio ... (Madison, Wisc. : Northwestern Historical Association, 1905), 79-80 (1841-1861); digital images, InternetArchive,

... an acrimonious strife ... arose over the question of removing the seat of justice from Bryan to West Unity ... The new court house at Bryan, although in the course of construction, was not nearly completed, and the citizens of West Unity considered it an opportune time to agitate the question of removal. The claims of West Unity, when geography is considered, were not very logical, however, as her location was only five miles away from the eastern boundary line; but she had two miles the advantage of Bryan, and the conflict raged furiously, regardless of former friendships or family ties. The question was finally settled by the interference of a third party--the legislature of the State of Ohio. On February 28, 1850, the General Assembly passed an act "to create the county of Fulton," taking for such purpose a large tract off the west end of Lucas, a smaller one from Henry county, and three tiers of sections off the east side of Millcreek township, and two from Brady in Williams county. This endedthe vexed controversy between West Unity and Williams County and Bryan; for the former now had no advantage of the latter when the charge of being "a border town" was discussed, each being about equally distant from a line that bounded another jurisdication. This act of the legislature also made the eastern boundary line of Williams county decidedly irregular, and reduced the superficial area to 430 square miles--a little more than is required by law ...
