Introduction
Old Dominion at its height contained 950 acres, but much was marshland and only 350 acres was arable. To maximize land area, dikes were used in some places, so the overall shape was irregular. The plantation included earlier grants (180 acres to Henry Bailey and 44 acres to John Hayne). The property included scattered slave cabins and a rarely used wharf.[1]
John Hanahan left this plantation to his wife,[2] and then his children. Hanahan's heirs sold it in 1857 to William Mikell Bailey.[3] A part of this plantation had been sold to Ephraim C. Bailey. [4]
The original property was located near present-day Pine Landing Road off SC 174.[5]
