Surnames/tags: Lewis Lewes
This is a research project of the Lewis Name Study. There is also a related Lewis Men of Early New England study.
Here is the list of living men with surname Lewis who have attached a Y-DNA test to their WikiTree profile as of 15 Apr 2023. The Y chromosome is passed from father to son unchanged (with minor mutations taking place randomly, but on average just about once every 83 years for a Big Y-700 test). Two men who "match" on Y-DNA are proven to descend from a common paternal-line ancestor. If both men share the same surname (such as Lewis), their most recent common ancestor almost certainly did too.
Lewis is a very common surname in the UK and the US and includes at least 100+ unrelated paternal lines (and perhaps many more). Y-DNA testing, especially Big Y-700 testing, is a great tool to provide supporting evidence to early paper trails that aren't fully documented.
In the cases of men who Y-DNA tested on FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) and joined the FTDNA "Lewis-2" surname project, I have included their Lewis project grouping. Note: for easier searching the FTDNA test results, change the FTDNA page size from 500 to 3000 after clicking on the above link.
To be discovered for inclusion on the list, the men must meet the following criteria:
- Living as of 15 Apr 2023
- Surname is Lewis or Lewes
- Must attach a Y-DNA test result to their profile
- Profile privacy settings must be one of these:
- Private with Public Family Tree
- Private with Public Biography and Family Tree
To get the most current, updated list, sign in to WikiTree - then click Living Lewis Y-DNA-tested profiles or Living Lewes Y-DNA-tested profiles. As of Apr 2023, there are no living Lewes surname profiles with an attached Y-DNA test.
Note that this query returns any living Lewis who is associated with a Y-DNA test - including tests taken by some other person on their paternal line. Associated men who didn't test themselves are included in the list below with "See test-taker profile" in the Notes. If they aren't closely related to the test-taker, they're ideal candidates to take a confirming Y-DNA test (especially Big Y).
The following living men were tested and show up in the above WikiTree+ query as a match with someone else's Y-DNA test on the list. This means they both took a test and are related to each on their paternal line.
WikiTree ID on List | Test Taker |
Edwin Lewis Jr 27555 | Ronald Lewis 48122 |
Don Lewis 28554 | Tom Lewis 28555 |
