Biography

Cynthia was born about 1817.

Cynthia (aka Scyntha) Spencer married Archibald Vickers on 16 Mar 1835 in Belmont, Ohio.[1] In 1850, the family was living in Windsor, Morgan, Ohio.[2] By 1860, they had moved to Monitau Township, Cooper, Missouri.[3]

She passed away in 1861, although her grave marker states 1860. A grave marker was erected in Stover Cemetery, Stover, Morgan County, Missouri. It was obviously placed there many years after her death. Her husband and son, Archie Jr, are also inscribed on the stone. All three died by hanging by Bush-Wackers in 1861 on the same day.[4]

Gladys (Vickers) Bartoski Family History

"Archibald and Cynthia (Spencer) Vickers were the parents of five sons and three daughters. Archie (as he preffered to be called) was born in Virginia. It is presumed taht Cynthia was born in Virginia, as her parents were a Lord and Lady Spencer of Virginia. All their children were born in Zanesville, Ohio.

Archie was part owner of the Calico Railroad Co. in Ohio. In 1858 or 1859 Archie sold his share of the company and moved his family to Missouri. Archie transferred some of his money into gold bricks before leaving Ohio. The family traveled in covered wagon bringing most of their belongings with them.

After arriving in Missouri they settled on the Osage River near where the Bagnall Dam is now located. It was in late 1861 that the children were made orphans.

Archie and Cynthia died as well as a son, Archibald Jr. The three were buried in a cemetery near the Osage River, and after the dam was built the government moved the bodies to Stover, Missouri.

A daughter Margha(sic) was married and stayed in Ohio. The second daughter died at age fifteen. The orphan children were george Washington, Wirley Adams, Susanna Lucille, Acquill C. There was a son William, but don';t know what happened to him.

Wirley tells that as they came home from school one day they found a band of Bush-Wackers there. They hung his parents right before their childrens eyes and were setting the house on fire. The children ran in all directions into the woods and became separated from each other."
