Biography

Jacob Spicer, son of Samuel and Esther Tilton Spicer, was born 20 Mar 1668 in Gravesend, Kings County (Brooklyn), New York.[1]

Jacob Spicer married Sarah Eldridge 6 Mar 1716 at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia.[2][3] The original copy of this marriage record indicates they were of Cape May.[4] Some sources state Marriage place was Salem, New Jersey. [5]

Jacob died Apr 17 1741, age 73, i Cape May County, New Jersey. Col Jacob Spicer is buried in Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery, Cape May, New Jersey. The stone reads: “In Memory of Colonel Jacob Spicer Who died April 17th 1741 Age 73 Years” “Death thou hast conquered me. I by thy darts am slain. But Christ shall conquer thee. And I shall rise again”.[6]

Abstract of will[7]

"1732, Nov. 4. Spicer, Jacob, of Cape May Co., yeoman; will of, wife, Sarah. Son, Jacob, all my lands within the province of West New Jersey or elsewhere, also two-thirds of personal estate; but if he dies before 23, "which will be the tenth of April, or thereabout, 1739," without lawful issue, then my brother Thomas Spicer, shall hold my land in the County of Gloucester, he to have 1/2 of the benefit of the fishery on my plantation in Gloucester County, during life, and same to revert to my son Jacob, in case he survives him. Executors--wife, Sarah, and son, Jacob. Witnesses--Jacob Spicer, William Coats, Joshuay Grainger, Joseph Sleigh. Affirmed 9 April, 1742. Lib. 4, p. 318."

It's interesting that while his father was such a stalwart Quaker, Jacob was a Presbyterian.
