John was born in 1746 at the fishing village of Auchmithie, third son to fisherman James Spink and his wife Margaret Cargill. He was baptised on 26 May 1746. [1]

John grew up in Auchmithie and followed the family tradition as a fisherman.

On 12 November 1773 when aged 27 he married Janet Swankie , five years his junior, daughter to a local fisherman, David Swankie.[2]

John Spink and Janet Swankie had six daughter and three sons:

  • Agnes b. 1775 mar. David Cargill
  • John b. 1777 drown off Auchmithie 25 May 1821
  • Jean b. 1779
  • Elizabeth b. circa 1782 died infancy.
  • Mary b. Mary 1785 died infancy
  • James b. 1787 d. 27 Apr. 1793 aged 6
  • Margaret b. 1781 mar. David Beattie
  • David b. 1790 mar. Campbell Swankie
  • Helen b. 1795 mar. William Swankie

John Spink was a mariner/fisherman sailing for Auchmithie all his life. In 1805, he erected with his wife Janet Swankie a gravestone in memory of their three deceased children and naming their six surviving children. This gravestone bears a fine image of a fishing boat and anchor beside two fish and a brief poem.

It is not discovered when John died.
