Biography

Chester Stacy was enumerated at 328 District, Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina for the November 12, United States Census, 1850. He was noted as born 1822 in South Carolina. He was a farmer with $1800 of value in real estate as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are female Pe? Stacy, male William Stacy, female Mary Stacy, male Samuel Stacy, male Richardson Stacy, male James Stacy, male Isaac Stacy and male John Stacy.[1]

Chester Stacy was enumerated at Post Office Grassy Pond, Northern Division, Spartanburg County, South Carolina for the August 21, United States Census, 1860. He was noted as born 1811 in South Carolina. He was a farmer and had $5000 in value of real estate and $10582 in value of personal estate as seen in the image of the original census. Also included in the household are female Peniah Stacy, male William Stacy, female Mary S Stacy, male Saml A Stacy, male Richmond Stacy, male Jas F Stacy, male Isaac Stacy, male John D Stacy, male Thos J Stacy, female Nancy Stacy, female Ailey Stacy, male Fred L Stacy and male Amos Stacy.[2]

Chester Stacy was enumerated at Limestone Springs Post Office, Limestone Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina for the July, United States Census, 1870. He was noted as born 1812 in South Carolina and a farmer. He had $1060 in value of real estate and $955 of personal assets. He was marked as unable to read or write as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are female Mary Stacy, male Thomas Stacy, female Nancy Stacy, female Aby Stacy, male Frederick Stacy, male Amos Stacy, male William Stacy, female Laurina Stacy and male Franklin Stacy.[3]

Martin Chester Stacy is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, Cherokee County, South Carolina.[4]

M.C. Stacy lived and died at his home near Broad River in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. He was a farmer, blacksmith and ferryman and "prominent in Church work" according to his obituary.

Chester was initially buried in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, but his grave was moved to Oakland Cemetery in downtown Gaffney a few years later to make room for a road that was cut straight through the cemetery.

  • Birth date of Aug. 1, 1811 was recorded in Robert Stacy family bible. Confirmed by a 1949 article about a reunion of his descendants in the Gaffney Ledger. His tombstone, which likely dates to after 1910, incorrectly gives his birth date as Aug. 11, 1811.
  • His death date is confirmed as Sep. 17, 1895 in both his estate inventory and obituary. The tombstone in Oakland Cemetery incorrectly gives it as Sep. 16.
