Biography

Note Joshua STAPLETON was born on January 28, 1782 in Robertson Co., Tenn. He died on December 1, 1844 in Gibson County, Indiana. Joshua and father Edward are the only two of the early Stapleton who died in Indiana Territory. The rest went on to Illinois and beyond. He Moved from Robertson County, Tennesse to Gibson Co., Indiana 1816 and purchased property there east of Princeton. The children were born there. Gibson County Land Records Book F. p. 103 --10/ 18/ 1836 --Joshua Stapleton gave land in Twp. 2 South of Range 10 West land offered for sale at Vincennes --the inhabitants of that Township 1/ 2 acre of land for a schoolhouse. Joshua Stapleton. Book G. p. 541 --Jan 8, 1841 --Joshua Stapleton and Elizabeth his wife of Gibson County sell to William Harbison of the same County for $ 600.00 the S W 1/ 4 Sec. I, Twp. 2 S R 10 West --160 acres (except 1 2 acre given for the school house). Joshua Stapleton & Elizabeth Stapleton. Joshua is only Stapleton who is in the Index to Estates for Gibson County 1813 to 1900. He was married to Elizabeth ELMORE (daughter of Travis ELMORE and Mary) about 1807 in TENN. Book G. p. 541 recorded above proves Elizabeth his wife. Elizabeth ELMORE was born on July 10, 1788 in Robertson Co., Tenn. She died on December 3, 1844 in Gibson County, Indiana. Elizabeth could not write and made her X mark on the deeds.
