Biography

Colonel Thomas Steadman was born 1758, in Frederick county, Virginia, a son of James Stedman, Jr. and his first wife, Sarah Pemberton. Thomas was born and raised on his father's estate, known as "The Heights." Berkeley County was formed in October, 1772 from the northern part of Frederick County.

Thomas was a farmer, owned a Cooperage, and had an interest in gun manufacturing at Harpers Ferry. Before 1783, (when his daughter Sarah was born) Thomas married Linah Perry. Children of Thomas and Linah include:

  • Sarah Steadman, born 1783, married name Goldsbury
  • John Steadman aka Stedman, born April 20, 1786, at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, died May 27, 1856, in Leesburg, Loudoun county, Virginia, married Margaret Wyckoff, daughter of Peter Wyckoff and Catrina Kroesen
  • Colonel James Steadman aka Stedman, served in the War of 1812, born April 27, 1780, in Jefferson county, Virginia, died April 5, 1857, in Leesburg, Loudoun county, Virginia, married Alice "Alsey" FouchÃ, a daughter of Jacob Fouchà and Perenah Elizabeth McDaniel
  • Mary Eleanor Steadman, born February 14, 1793, died 1854, married James Wyckoff, son of Peter Wyckoff and Catrina Kroesen

Thomas died 1814, in Jefferson county, Virginia (Note: Jefferson County was established from a portion of Berkeley County by the Virginia General Assembly on October 26, 1801) Thomas' Will is on file in the Jefferson County Court House and gives the names of his children. Data on birth and death of three of these four children is from Bible and Court records. Descendants of his children have been located except for Sarah who married a Goldsbury.
