The following details were transcribed from his Civil War Pension file. [1] 22 Nov 1864, Charles Crockett Steele enlisted with the US Army about Oct 1864 as a substitute soldier. He served in place of Enoch Barkley.
Jan 1865 Army of the United States. Certificate of Disability for discharge Charles C Steel, of Captain Unassigned Substitute, Company ___, of the Unassigned Regiment of the United States was enlisted by .... Capt Fowler 7th Div, at Missouri on the 22nd day of November, 1864, to serve one year. He was born in the state of Virginia, is 18 years of age, 5 feet, 4 inches high, Dark complexion, Hazel eyes, Black hair, and by occupation when enlisted a Farmer. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty ___ days. The Board having carefully examined the above named substitute find him unfit for military service by reason of a want of Physical Development, and his being under age. he is only 16 years old. Station: Depot Benton Barracks, MO Date: Dec 20th 1864. Signed by Morrison CO of U f A, President of Board, Commanding Post. I certify, that I have carefully examined the said Charles C Steele (morrisson signature) of Captain Substitute Company and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of a want of Physical development. He has very delicate limbs and is apparently not over 17 years old.
