Biography

James Stephenson and Elizabeth Judith Brown likely lived on the banks of the LIttle Wateree River at the Old Camden Road in Fairfield District. Here they raised one daughter and nine sons, five of which are named in the 1840 Final Distribution of his estate in Fairfield County, SC. Letters of Administration were issued July 1836 to his son Jesse R Stevenson. James was literate as his estate inventory contained books. Further proof can be found in his deeds recorded in Fairfield County Court House as the Clerk Ordinary indicated a LS.

Interesting to me is that three of his seven sons who survived to adulthood became physicians. We have only detailed information on youngest son William Joel Stevenson who practiced in Rossville, Rocky Creek area of Chester County. Oldest son Dr Thos D B Stevenson practiced in Newberry District and died at age 33 without issue. Dr Charles Martin Stevenson is lost to us as far as documentation. He was living in Fairfield Dist as late as 1835 when father James Stephenson died, but according to a nephew Chas A Stevenson b 1869 (son of Daniel R Stevenson and second wife Nancy Beaty) , he "moved West" and no death date is known.

A popular history of the descendants of William "Little Gabriel" Stevenson d 1809 Rowan Co NC by Saml Harris Stevenson was probably the source of the unproved father of James to be John Stevenson, brother of Wm Little Gabriel Stevenson. As James Stevenson and his male descendants are yDNA Haplogroup I-M253 (I1), it is unlikely that James is related to the Wm "Little Gabriel" Stevenson line as they appear to be R-M269 (R1b) Haplogroup. I have not proved this however.

There is only unproved family lore that James Stephenson/Stevenson and a cousin migrated from Iredell County NC to SC to work on the new canal project [which one not cited]. I believe this is probably all coming from the book A history and genealogical record of the Stevenson family, from 1748 to 1926 by Stevenson, Samuel Harris Stevenson, William Francis and Harris, James Abner pub 2nd ed 1926.

pdf at familysearch.org https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/493215-a-history-and-genealogical-record-of-the-stevenson-family-from-1748-to-1926?viewer=1&offset=0#page=1&viewer=picture&o=search&n=0&q=chester%20county

The author Samuel Harris Stevenson 1813-1899, states on p 36 that Rev Wm "Little Gabriel" Stevenson ( who settled in Iredell Co NC) had a brother named John who settled near Blackstock SC on the state line and is the ancestor of the Rocky Creek Stevensons. I believe yDNA testing disproves this theory. The Rocky Creek line is Haplogroup I2 and the Wm LG Stevenson line appears to be R1b. However, further PROOF of Little Gabriel Stevenson lines are needed to confirm this.
