Born in Pietermaritzberg, Natal, South Africa in 1904, Cyril (aka Bob) emigrated to New Zealand with his older brother Glen, and his Parents Nellie and Harry, sometime between 1904 and 1907. Immigration record not found yet.
The family settled in Christchurch, New Zealand, where Bob grew up and he and his brother Glen, later joined the Avon Rowing Club. They both became very good rowers.
By the late 1920's, Bob had found a new rowing partner, Fred Thompson (aka Rangi) and the pair were winning regattas all over New Zealand and Australia and also at the 1930 British Empire Games. (Now called British Commonwealth Games).
In 1932, Bob and Rangi were selected for the New Zealand Rowing team to attend the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Bob and Rangi won the Silver Medal in the Coxless Pairs Final.
Back home in New Zealand, Bob continued his life as a carpenter, but his hobby was building and restoring old Rowing Canoes and Kayaks.
Bob married Eileen Vaughan in 1928 - but said he was single on his entry record to California in 1932.
