He was born about 1820 in Lewis, Kentucky, United States to Joseph Stillwell Nancy Coons. By 1830, his father had moved the family to Parke County, IN. ^[1]

His father seems to have died around 1830 in Indiana. On the 1840 Census, he's head of household and living with his mother and siblings.^[2]

Married Nancy Brown in Arkansas.^[3]

He farmed in Arkansas. ^{[4] [5]}

Moved his family to Texas. He registered to vote in Grayson County, Texas on 26 Jul 1867.^[6]And is on the Census Roll for Cooke County, Texas in 1870.^[7]

Problem of the John Stillwells. There are at least 3 John Stillwells born in 1820. They have gotten confused on Ancestry and My Heritage family pages. I've fairly documented and sorted them out. Here are my short notes: A. John (Adams Coons) Stillwell/Nancy Coons Stillwell Children: John Wesley, Louisa, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Henry, Hester Ann, William Sylvester, Christopher Colombus, Mary Elizabeth, Albert Houston, Nancy Jean Did not serve in military during his lifetime.

B. John Stillwell/Sarah Ann Walton Stillwell Children: Delila, Simpson, Lewellyn; Mother Martha (possibly served in Civil War Union; unconfirmed) Lived KY 1850, MO 1860, IL 1870

C. John A. (Augustus) Stillwell/Nancy Lamb Children: Henry, Julia, Augustus, Sally, Bettie Born in GA/KY, Lived in Texas, served in the Mexican American And Civil Wars (Confederacy) with mounted Calvary units. Lists occupation as Grocer on 1880 Census.
