Stephen's death was recorded in the Evening Post:
FATAL ACCIDENT THIS DAY. A MAN KILLED IN WILLIS-STREET.
A shocking accident occurred in Willis-street this afternoon, at about 2 o'clock, resulting in the almost instantaneous death of a man named Stephen Stockbridge, about 35 years of age, a milkman in the employ of Mr. Fitchett, of Fitchett's Farm.
It appears that the deceased was driving a cart along the thoroughfare named, and when opposite the Te Aro Hotel, suddenly fell off, the wheel passing over his head. He was observed to be sitting rather loosely on the near-side of the cart, and it is supposed that he was thrown off by a sudden jerk, caused by the wheel coming in contact with a rut or obstruction in the road.
Several persons witnessed the occurrence, and at once rushed to the spot. It was then evident that the unfortunate man was dying. His head was found to be completely crushed, the wheel having apparently passed over the cheek and temple. A large pool of blood was lying in the road, and the unhappy man was quite unconscious. One or two of the bystanders at once went for medical assistance. In a very few minutes Dr. Collins was in attendance, closely followed by Dr. Harding. Within 10 minutes after the accident occurred, however, the unfortunate man had breathed his last on the spot where the accident occurred. Sergt. Price was also soon in attendance, and the body was removed to the morgue, where it now awaits an inquest.
