Biography

Leander Stratton was born on January 27, 1812 in Athol, Worcester, Massachusetts. He was the son of James Stratton and Betsey Wheeler. He moved with his parents to Concord, Erie, New York in 1812, and to Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York in 1819. He married Lucy Foster, daughter of Parney Chase and Jonathan Foster, in 1835. [1] [2]

In 1850, Leander and his wife Lucy, and their children, Alonzo, Alzina and Alzora, lived in Little Valley where Leander was a farmer. [3] A son, Albert Lorenzo, died in 1851 at 7 months old. A daughter, Alzeda, was born in 1855. [4] [5] In 1865, 21-year-old Alzora was a school teacher. [6] In 1870, Leander, Lucy and their 15-year-old daughter, Alzeda, lived in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York. [7] Lucy died in 1872.

The widowed Leander married Mrs. Mary Wheeler Fellows, and they moved to Grandview, Rhea, Tennessee. "In the quiet, peacefulness of his mountain home he spent many hours in reading and writing. During the last twenty-five years of his life he was a regular contributor to the Forest & Stream, furnishing articles largely reminiscent of the early days and fraught with an intimate knowledge of natural history, gained by a long life spent 'near to Nature's heart.' Many of his articles were written after he was 75 years old, and up to a few months before his death. That all his life he had been a close student of the 'Book of Nature' is very evident from those little sketches." [8]

Leander died on November 30, 1899 in Grandview, Rhea, Tennessee and was buried in Stebbins Cemetery in Grandview. [9]
