Biography

Andrew Rauch Smoak or Smoke married his first wife, Mary Catherine Stroman on Nov 3, 1780. She was the mother of three children: William G. Smoak (born Feb 7, 1784 and died Oct 7, 1882 in Cordova, Orngeburg County, South Carolina), David William Smoak (born 1784 and died 1853).[1] Mary Catherine Stroman must have died sometime in 1785, because it was noted that Andrew Rauch Smoak married Mary Catherine brother's widow, Anna Catherine (widow) Stroman in 1786. If Mary Catherine Stroman Smoak was sick, she would have needed another woman, perhaps her sister-in-law to take care of the house and children in order to get well or over childbirth. Many times families lived in communal groups inorder to help each other out and procection from the elements and indiginous people who owned the land prior to European settlelment. Anna Catherine's maiden name is not known or lost to history. Most likely Andrew Rauch Smoak had children together with Anna Catherine. Most women had children every one to three years of their childbearing years. [2] Possible children were Elizabeth Ann (17 April 1788 – 12 September 1828), Lewis Golson Smoak (17 August 1789 – about 1870), Charles Smoak (about 1791 – Deceased), and Kezia Catherine Smoak (27 December 1794 – death before 1860). Anna Catherine Stroman Smoak died 14 October 1795 in Amelia Township, Orangeburg, South Carolina, United States, and was buried in Saint Matthews, Calhoun, South Carolina, United States. Her husband Andrew Rauch Smoak would soon remarry Harriett Joanna Gilbert ca. 1796.

Stroman-43 and Stroman-16 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse and wedding date
posted by [Living Emmons]
Stroman-43 and Stroman-16 are not ready to be merged because: Andrew Smoke was married to Mary Catherine Stroman and later to Anne Catherine (Unknown) Stroman. Stroman-43 appears to be a mixture of both women, with unsourced parents who could match Mary Catherine, and children who are definitely not hers according to notes on Stroman-16.
