Biography

David Ogden III was born in 1727. Jane Sturges was born two years later in 1729. Their families worshipped at the Congregational Church, now located on Beach Rd. Jane's family lived on Mill Plain Rd and David's brother lived next door.

On April 5, 1760, they were married by Rev. Noah Hobart at Christ’s Church, Fairfield. Jane brought a sizable dowry while David's family gave the couple over 75 acres where they built their home on Bronson Rd. The following year, their first child, Abigail, was born. There were nine more children born thereafter; Eunice, Sturges I, Mary, David IV, Ellen, Sturges II, Joseph, Elizabeth and Abel. Sturges I died just 2 days after be was born; Mary died as an infant and Joseph died one day after he was born.

In colonial Fairfield, almost everyone were farmers. The Ogden's worked the land with their children. They grew corn and had an apple orchard, making their own cider. They kept cows, horses, sheep, hogs, chickens & turkeys. Although farming was hard work, they enjoyed relative luxuries for the period, including silver, fine china, carpets, upholstered furniture and draperies.

All of these items were documented in David's will made in 1751, just 15 days before his death, September 6, 1776, at the age of 49, leaving Jane, 46, to raise their remaining five youngest children, ages 5-15. As a widow, Jane was entitled to 1/3 of the home with access to the basement for washing and kitchen for cooking. It is documented that during this period, Jane also cared for others as a nurse.

Their children went on to marry into families in the area, Penfield, Sherwood, Burr and Bulkeley. Elizabeth married her 1st cousin Edward becoming Elizabeth Ogden Sturges. David IV and Sturges II, served in the Revolutionary War for independence.

Jane survived her husband by 32 years, dying in 1807, age 78.[1]
