Biography

Jewell was born in Barber, Logan County, AR, in 1908. Jewell appears on the 1920 United States Federal Census as the fifth child of Thomas and Emily Belle Swafford.

Oren and Jewell both claimed to be 18 years old for their marriage license on 25 Oct 1924. Oren was only 16 and Jewell would turn 16 on 26 Oct 1924, the day after their marriage.

She passed away in 1928 and is buried in Star Cemetery, Keota, Haskell County, OK, near her father-in-law, Charles Dolphus McPhetridge. She died due to complications of the birth of her 2nd son who died within days of birth. He remained unnamed and is buried next to Jewell. Only Charles Dolphus has a headstone. It is interesting to note that every major event in Jewell's short life occurred in October: birth, marriage, birth of both sons and death.
