John was born in Berkeley County, Virginia in about 1778, to Mathias Swaim and Abigail Hedges.[1] His family moved to Jefferson County, Ohio, and John later settled in Harrison County, where he married Rachel in about 1825. They had three children.
John Swaim and his family moved to Allen County, Ohio, in about 1835, along with his brothers Daniel and Joshua.[2] He died there in 1845, splitting his estate equally between his three children, aside from an additional $100 that was to go to Samuel.[3][4]
