Mark Swanson was born 1945 in New London, Connecticut where his father was stationed at the US Coast Guard Academy with the Coast Guard Band. He joined the US Army in 1964 and spent over 2 years overseas. Besides New London, Connecticut, he lived in San Diego, California, in the Miami and Ocala, Florida areas and in the area of Portland, Oregon, where he received a bachelor's degree in geography from Portland State University with coursework in urban planning. Mark worked for several US government agencies, and also built and remodeled several houses.
When Mark was 30 years old, he caught the genealogy bug, and spent the rest of his life investigating his ancestry and heritage. His favorite phrases were "Genealogie ohne Quellen ist Mythologie" (Genealogy without sources is mythology) and "L'amour est plus puissant que la mort" (Love is more powerful than death), the family motto of his von Schwan ancestors.
In later years, after living in all 4 corners of the lower 48, he lived in Nashville, Tennessee and the mountains of western North Carolina.
