Biography

Lewis Sylvester was born on 18 Aug 1845. He was the son of Frederick Sylvester and Sarah Houston. He was baptized on 16 May 1847 at the Church of the Redemption [Episcopal] in Philadelphia.

The 1850 Census shows Lewis (4) should be 5, at home with his parents and siblings Elizabeth, Fannie, Henry, Frederick, Williams in Locust Ward Philadelphia. Their grandmother Anna Houston (71) was living with them also.

The 1860 Census shows Lewis (8), should be 15, at home with his parents and siblings, Fannie Henry, Charles, Arthur, and Frederick in Philadelphia Ward 7. They have 2 servants,

The 1870 Census shows Lewis (25) at home with his siblings Fannie, Henry, Frederick, Eleanor, Charles, and Arthur living in Ward 8 Philadelphia. Eliza's children Sarah and William McCullough are living with them still.

He was issued a passport on 16 July 1873. He was listed as 28 and 5'5" having a high forehead, blue eyes, straight nose, short chin, auburn hair, oval face, medium mouth, and florid complexion.

3 Oct 1876 he made a will. He was working as a mechanical engineer. He expressed a desire for his debts to be paid. He also wanted an invitation to his funeral to be be extended to (something hard to read) at U A (looks like afce) and Levy at the Penn Works and whoever else they think. He leaves Fannie and Eleanor all his cash on hand and on deposit.

He died on 4 Oct 1876 at 30 years old. He was buried at Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
